It's not Patch Tuesday, but Apple, Microsoft, Google and more have released updates this week. The best technology news of the century was released today. Perhaps the millennium. In about 3 years Adobe will finally discontinue support for Flash, effectively removing the largest bulls-eye from your computer. As an end-user, are you still using Flash -- or do you only think you're still using Flash? The typical computer should see approximately 400mb of updates. Let's get started. Continue reading

It's Patch Tuesday. Be aware that Adobe Reader 11 will be end-of-life in only a month, so it's time to either remove Adobe Reader completely, or replace it with Acrobat DC. Likewise, Windows 10 v1511 will be end-of-life in October as well -- all prior versions are already end-of-life and should have been replaced. If you haven't upgraded to v1703 (aka "Creators Update") yet, do so now. The typical computer should see roughly 1.5gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

Hi, Folks! It's Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. Just in time for Christmas Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and more have released tons of security updates to keep the IT guy you know and love busy all season long. I've had a lot of calls recently from people whose computers seem unusually slow since late October. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don't let it finish and you're on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don't have the bandwidth to download the bits, I'm happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information. The typical computer should see roughly 2gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

It's March, so the next build of Windows 10 will be released any day now. This is a 6gb download that introduces a few new features and controls, but is not yet widely tested. Don't be the guinea pig. For at least the next month, when you're prompted that "the new version of Windows is ready," just say no! I'll report here when I believe it is safe for most users. It's Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. Lots of small updates for almost all popular software. The typical computer should see roughly 1.7gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

The next build of Windows 10 v1803 was released last week. While Microsoft has given 1803 the nod, on half the computers I've tested it on there are driver conflicts. Don't be the guinea pig. For at least the next month, when you're prompted that "the new version of Windows is ready," just say no! I'll report here when I believe it is safe for most users. Unfortunately, if you're running the Home version of Windows 10, you may not be given the option to say no. Restart your computer during the 1803 download and this will buy you some time. Note that since 1803 is now released, some older versions are EOL (end-of-life). If your version of Windows 10 is older than 1607 (build 14393), then it is no longer supported and CAN NOT be secured: Update now, or remove it from the Internet. It's Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. The typical computer should see roughly 2.6gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

Hi, Folks! The next build of macOS, Mojave (10.14), is on the horizon. It will be released next month, and this means that devices running El Capitan (10.11) or older will no longer be supported. Your options are to either upgrade to at least Sierra (10.12) or replace your device. Mojave will not run on all Macs, just as High Sierra and even Sierra made some devices unusable. If in doubt whether your device will be able to support an operating system upgrade, be sure to perform a full disk backup prior to upgrade. This last month has also brought an enormous increase in phishing attempts worldwide. More about phishing and what you can do to protect yourself in an article due soon. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Today is Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. The typical computer should see roughly 3gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

Remember: with the short release cycle of software companies today, YOU are the beta tester, so be prepared - run backups. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Today is Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. The typical computer should see roughly 3.5gb in updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

It's not Patch Tuesday, but Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, Google and many others have released updates this week. "Yet another" zero-day Adobe Flash exploit is being used to actively hack computers as they browse the Internet. Most browsers have Flash baked-in now, so are actively building updates to patch this new vulnerability. While you should patch your browser, you should also disable Flash across your device and within each browser as the best defense against the lowest-hanging fruit in security today: Adobe Flash. The typical computer should see approximately 500mb of updates today. Let's get started. Continue reading

Happy Valentine's Day, Folks! Today is Patch Tuesday and it's a big one. Alongside every major vendor updates, nearly all mobile platforms have major updates over the last month to address security issues with WiFi and a lot of hardware has hit, or is nearing, end-of-life (EOL). This month Nvidia drops support for the entire Fermi line of GPUs. Windows 7 is nearing EOL. The last couple weeks has seen Firefox 65 severely stumble as a result of Avast's poorly designed MITM "security feature," Apple's FaceTime being abused to listen in to call recipients, whether they answer or not, and Facebook paying children to install an "anything-but-private" VPN... Today is Patch Tuesday for March 2019, which means that the next build of Windows (v1903) is just around the corner. You can delay it by installing v1809 if you haven't done so yet, which will grant you a 3 month reprieve. Among other features and fixes, v1903 will add automatic boot repair after failed updates. This should resolve the #1 issue plaguing the Windows Update platform: not knowing whether your computer will boot after installing updates. Even so, don't be the guinea pig. Postpone v1903 for a couple months to let people that don't know any better be the victims of whatever flaws v1903 inevitably brings. Continue reading

Hi, Folks! Today is Patch Tuesday for April 2019. Windows 10 v1903 is just around the corner. Edge users will start getting it over the next few days, with the majority of Home users getting it near the end of the month. You can delay it by installing v1809 if you haven't done so yet, which will grant you a 3 month reprieve. Today is also the last day of updates released for any Windows 10 version prior to v1803. If you're running v1507-v1709 (and not running a long-term servicing build) then you should upgrade to v1809 ASAP. The typical computer should see roughly 1.2 GB in updates today. Let's get started.
